Reprints The Walking Dead #31-36 (September 2006-March 2007). Micchone, Glenn, and Rick stage their escape from Woodbury and the Governor with the help of a guard named Martinez and a nurse named Alice, but Martinez might not be all that he seems. While Rick, Glenn, and Micchone have been gone from the prison, all hell has broken loose as zombies breach the walls and the survivors fight for control.  Rick finds himself in need and relying on others  while trying to accept the loss of his hand.

Following the events of The Walking Dead Volume 5: The Best Defense, Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard put a lot of stock in the confrontation with Woodbury. This collection and the following collections deal with the actions of Micchone, Glenn, and Rick at Woodbury, and I feel take the comic down a much less realistic road (I know that kind of is a weird statement when the book is about a zombie apocalypse).  The comic has been collected multiple times in different versions.

The Walking Dead #33

The book is moving at a faster pace at this point, and the characters are bit more established. The characters are much more rounded and you are starting to get a feel for them. Fan favorite Glenn makes a big jump in the story in his relationship with Maggie, and Micchone continues to develop into a popular character. While Glenn is interesting, Micchone and the Governor seem too comic-booky. They are fun to read but part of The Walking Dead‘s charm is real characters…neither of these characters feel real (especially after Micchone enacts her revenge on the Governor).

The Walking Dead is either loved or hated. Some feel the whole zombie thing has become too cliche and The Walking Dead was a big part in really making zombies popular (even before the show). This book doesn’t help much. I enjoy Walking Dead stories of real people, leading real lives, in a real zombie apocalypse. I don’t want comic book villains and heroes fighting in a zombie apocalypse…that does feel overdone…hopefully the series moves past this stage of its run. The Walking Dead 6: This Sorrowful Life is followed by The Walking Dead 7:  The Calm Before.
