When the world is in danger, the Super Friends jump into action! Be it monsters attempting to take over the world, malfunctioning creations, mad scientists, or super-villains, Super Friends will attempt to set things right. With new trainees Zan and Jayna aka the Wonder Twins and their pet monkey Gleek, the Justice League has their hands full…but they also still have time to teach a lesson to the children when they need it.
The All-New Super Friends Hour—Season 1 is a DC Comics Hanna-Barbera superhero animated TV series. The series aired on Saturday mornings from September 10, 1977 to December 16, 1977 on ABC. Despite being labeled as Season 1, it actually is the second season of the Super Friends series following Super Friends! which originally aired in 1973.
The Super Friends cartoon was a Saturday morning institution when I was little. As a kid we played Super Friends on the playground and argued about who got to be whom and which character was better. Despite some pretty distinct differences between the seasons, the Super Friends show all blended together. The All-New Super Friends Hour however is where the series really began to take shape for me and many of my friends.
The difference this season was the breakout stars of the Wonder Twins. Wendy and Marvin were always big question marks with limited powers and an annoying dog, but the Wonder Twins (also with limited powers and annoying pet) actually worked here. The “Shape of an *animal*” and “Form of a *water based item*” was a fun little twist…and being younger characters, they were easy to connect to. I’m sure when the series was released there were stalwarts that argued that they weren’t “real characters” (they were introduced in the proper DC Universe much, much later), but they are fun and the most distinctive aspect of the series.
The episodes break down into a couple small groupings of the Super Friends (generally with the last short episode being a guest star like Flash or Green Lantern), a bigger episode with all the Super Friends, and a “lesson” type episode with the Wonder Twins helping kids on everything from anti-racism to not playing tricks. The show is very preachy, and the Super Friends never do anything wrong.
It is also fun to see the “side” stories within the Super Friends episodes. There are lessons about health and safety (like how to get something out of your eye), activities, and decoder messages and riddles. They are goofy and definitely aimed at younger children. Both it and the Wonder Twin stories show some age with things like Superman shaming a kid smoking cigarettes at a little league game and the Wonder Twins stopping a kids going after African American teens that “don’t belong in their neighborhood”…it is kind of shocking from today’s standards and especially since the target is such a young audience.
Fans of Super Friends will probably enjoy Super Friends for the nostalgia factor, but those who didn’t grow up with it or viewers older than five or six might turn up their nose at the show in comparison to much higher quality shows like Batman: The Animated Series or other current DC series which feature better storytelling and better art. Despite this, there is a nice simplicity to Super Friends that even the Batman series lacks. You know everything is going to turn out right and you have fun characters making it happen…which isn’t all that bad. The All-New Super Friends Hour was followed by Challenge of the Super Friends.
