With the ability to jump through space and time and the technology to really mess things up, Rick and Morty adventures always could take a dark turn. Be it breaking a truce with Rick’s lifelong enemy Mr. Nimbus or Morty simply causing the collapse of a society over wine, Rick, Morty, Summer, Beth, and Jerry are always up to their neck in trouble…and Rick wouldn’t have it any other way.
Rick and Morty—Season 5 is a science-fiction animated comedy series. The season aired from June 20, 2021 to September 5, 2021 on Adult Swim.
Rick and Morty, I imagine takes a lot of work to write. The stories are general pretty concise and high science fiction…and I am always amazed by the continuous quality of them. While Rick and Morty—Season 5 might not be my favorite Rick and Morty season, it still remains a solid entry.
A lot of fantasies wrap themselves in science-fiction when in fact they are just fantasies. Rick and Morty dives deep into true science fiction with the exploration of ideas and concepts. Much of Rick and Morty’s adventures revolve around parallel earth (which is the easy way out of screwing up a TV series like this), but I enjoy that Rick and Morty often doesn’t take the easy way out despite the built in fail safes…in Rick and Morty, actions have consequences, and that often isn’t the case with cartoon and animated series of this style.
It took a few seasons, but Rick and Morty (as characters) have grown on me…and the characters are growing too. Morty’s optimism from the first seasons have wavered a bit as Morty isn’t as afraid to get dirty while Rick has often proven that he is changing being around his family as much as he denies it. The fact that he tries to help his old friend Birdman shows he’s growing as a character and changing. In addition to the leads, Beth, Summer, and Jerry are becoming more developed instead of just being punchlines (I particularly like Rick/Summer adventures).
The animation for the series is slick and often adds to the story through visual jokes or parodies of other mediums that the show might be referencing. Like most cartoons, it probably is all digitally done, but it feels like a nice blend of hand-drawn and digitally created imagery which gives the show a bit more substance than something completely computer rendered.
Rick and Morty continues to wow. It is because it still manages to make (largely) smart episode after episode while often having an overarching story. This season isn’t heavy on the big story (it does have a few ties to bigger threads), but it remains a smart episode-to-episode storytelling feast for fans of science fiction. If you haven’t hopped on Rick and Morty, there is still time…but start at the beginning. It is worth it.
