Rick and Morty are continuing on their adventures, but Rick finds himself forced to be more “in tune” with Morty’s feelings and choices during the adventures. As they cross galaxies and times, Rick and Morty face the alternate realities, ultimate crew heists, pet dragons, trains to nowhere, deadly space snakes, pregnant planets, and a return of the Galactic Federation…but more importantly, is a vat of acid a good plot twist and who used Rick’s secret toilet? The answers could change the universe.
Rick and Morty—Season 4 aired from November 10, 2019 to May 31, 2020. The season followed the announcement that the show had been picked up for a long term deal. The season won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (“The Vat of Acid Episode”).
Rick and Morty is a fun show. It has clever writing and smart stories that not only reward regular viewers, but it also makes the series smarter than most. Watching Rick and Morty is a painful thing however…because each season you watch, you know it could be a long time before you get another one.
Like previous seasons, the series continue to provide actual science-fiction storylines without treating them like a joke. The show’s approach to “do the science” part of the science fiction results in a deeper level of exploration in each episode, but it also threatens to have the danger of trying to top the previous episode (which isn’t always possible). Despite the threat, the series does a great job having a relatively balanced and equal number of creative episodes to show that the series continues to have legs.
While Rick and Morty continue to be the focus of the show, the show has expanded the supporting cast. Like The Simpsons turn from Bart Simpson to Homer Simpson focused, Rick and Morty is showing some signs that Jerry-centric storylines also are popular. Fortunately, the series hasn’t completely given into this and still has a nice mix of Beth and Summer episodes (something that earlier seasons did lack). It is worth it to the show to develop these characters in that as the show branches out and continues, they provide different generations and genders to explore that Rick and Morty can’t necessarily supply.
Visually, the show is also a treat for viewers. With lots of visual cues and stories that often tie the visuals into other pop culture aspects, the show has a high level of “rewatch”. The slick look and clever characteristics of the characters provide a lot of screen to watch instead of just focusing on the main characters…there is generally fun stuff going on the background as well.
The first season was a challenge as you adjusted to the style and talk. As the series has evolved, Rick’s annoying tic has lessened and you get less belching (something that was a bit off-putting when the show started). You get a weirdly sweet “family” show where the family is willing to sometimes kill each other (or least clones of themselves). Rick and Morty—Season 4 continues strong…I just wait to get Season 5.
