Honey, this will be the best day ever!!!

Clara (Leticia Dolera) and Koldo (Diego Martin) are preparing for their big day.  The wedding goes off without a hitch, but the reception following is another story.  When one of their family members is found suffering from a dog bite he received at his job, something happens to their uncle.  A zombie plague breaks out in the reception hall and now Clara and Koldo’s perfect day has turned to hell.  Separated during the panic, Koldo is trying to find his way back to Clara as Clara fights for survival while surrounded by the possessed dead.

Directed by Paco Plaza, [REC]3:  Genesis is a bit of a prequel to [REC] and [REC]2 but also takes place during both stories (a dog at the kennel was mentioned in the first [REC] and scenes at the apartment are scene on a TV).  The movie was less well received than the previous entries.

[REC] was a good horror film that was rather inventive, [REC]2 was less so, but still enjoyable for the most part.  [REC]3:  Genesis unfortunately changed the style of the movie which changed the entire tone of the series.

You know the uncle that wants you to pull his finger…this one eats them

[REC]3:  Genesis is far too fun for a movie about man eating zombies tearing up a wedding.  It isn’t as light as Shaun of the Dead, but it still has a lot more humor than the previous entries.  You have people dressed in suits of armor, SpongeJohn, and chainsaw wielding brides; the movie is just worlds away from the first two movies.  A really dark ending doesn’t save it.

The cast is more at the forefront of this film than the other [REC] movies since the movie is a love story.  Leticia Dolera and Diego Martin are good in their roles, but their characters betray them at the end…I realize the whole “love is eternal” thing, but I don’t see Clara allowing her husband to sacrifice himself him and I also don’t see Koldo not putting Clara out of her misery…it was a rather dumb ending for two survivors.

It’s my wedding day!

The movie acts like a found footage movie for the beginning with friends shooting the reception.  The film introduces a steady camera operator to give the idea that the movie could be shot through it…then it doesn’t do it.  It tries to force the idea of cinéma vérité down the throat of the viewer, but instead, it feel like a mess.

[REC]3:  Genesis was a disappointing follow-up to a rather interesting (and scary) series.  It does procede to add to idea of the zombies being demonic zombies.  I wanted to like [REC]3 more, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to.  A fourth installment called [REC]4:  Apocalypse is scheduled for release in 2014.
