Snow White (Lily Collins) is an unfortunate girl. Her mother died in childbirth and her father (Sean Bean) goes to war…never to return. This leaves Snow in the care of her stepmother Queen Clementianna (Julia Roberts), and the Queen has plans for Snow White. Deciding she is a threat to her rule, the Queen orders her servant Brighton (Nathan Lane) to kill her. Instead Brighton releases her into the forest where she meet seven dwarfs named Grimm (Danny Woodburn), Butcher (Martin Klebba), Wolf (Sebastian Saraceno), Napoleon (Jordan Prentis), Half Pint (Mark Povinelli), Grub (Joe Gnoffo), and Chuckles (Ronald Lee Clark). Becoming a thief, Snow now must rescue Prince Alcott (Armie Hammer) from the Queen’s clutches before she loses everything.
Directed by Tarsem Singh, Mirror Mirror is a retelling of the Grimm Brothers Snow White. The movie was panned by critics, but was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design.
Mirror Mirror was produced and released as a complete face-off against the rival Snow White film Snow White and the Huntsman. Both pictures took different approaches to the same basic Grimm Fairy Tale, but Snow White and the Huntsman was received much better.
Mirror Mirror has a rather strange balance…or unbalanced approach to the story. It can’t decide if it is a comedy, an action movie, or just a bad romantic melodrama. I wish that the film stuck to the approach it appears to set up at the beginning of the film. The movie sets up that it is about the Queen Clementianna, but it becomes about Snow White as predicted. I’m no Julia Roberts fan, but I think she was the only one in this movie with any energy and having any fun.
Tarsem’s films are always interesting to look at. Like The Cell, I think this film lacks much substance, but it is really cool at points and not just in the Oscar nominated costumes. Tarsem sets up some really cool visuals in the forest and at the dance, but like most of his films he doesn’t have the story to support them (if you’d like to see one of his films where the story is pretty good, check out The Fall which gets the visuals to match the story).
Mirror Mirror isn’t a very good film and is quite boring at points. If you come for the visuals, you’ll be appeased, but if you come as a fan of Snow White or any of the actors, you probably will leave disappointed. Snow White and the Huntsman isn’t a great film, but you are probably better off checking out that film if you want a “modern” telling of the story.
