When Lobo attacks, Aquaman is made a fool in front of the world. Returning to Atlanis with the Justice League, Aquaman discovers his half-brother Ocean Master is planning a coup with his partner Atrocitus of the Red Lanterns by turning the Atlanteans against him. Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Cyborg, and Batman find themselves stranded on an alien planet while Jessica Cruz stands with Batgirl and Robin against the entire Atlantean army!
Directed by Matt Peters, Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Aquaman—Rage of Atlantis is an animated superhero action-adventure movie. Following Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash also released in 2018, the film premiered at the San Diego Comic Con before premiering on digital, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
I love the Lego comic book toy lines. If they had existed when I was young, I would have had almost all my birthdays and Christmas plotted to get all the heroes. The big screen Lego movies have been hit (aka The Lego Movie) or miss (aka The Lego Ninjago Movie), but the straight-to-video line of movies have been pretty consistent…but average.
The movie was building on the “wave” of merchandising for the Aquaman movie being released later in 2018. The character in many mediums had always been a joke and the movie takes the “joke” form of Aquaman instead of Jason Momoa’s buff & cool version. This is the classic Aquaman that talks to fish and doesn’t seem to have much of a range in his powers.
The movie weaves the Aquaman story with a Jessica Cruz story which introduces the fun Green Lantern to the series (the film is sometimes found packaged with a Jessica Cruz minifigure). The comic book Jessica Cruz suffers agoraphobia and trauma from an experience in her past, but this Jessica Cruz is just insecure. As expected, the character finds her feet in the movie and conquers her fears.
While the big screen Lego movies are rather stylized, the small screen Lego movies are pretty basic. They are animated and much like the Lego video game, the characters have the look and texture of the toys (minus the feet holes which I find weirdly disturbing). It isn’t as cool as The Lego Movie, and there isn’t as much self-reflexive fun playing with the idea of Legos as they do in the bigger films.
Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Aquaman—Rage of Atlantis is a fine time waster. It has a few laughs, looks ok, and has decent voice acting. If you are looking for a family superhero film, there is nothing wrong with it, and most of the family can enjoy it more than an average “kids’ film”. I have a soft spot for Aquaman in all his goofiness and always hope he comes out on top.
