krypton season 2 episode 9 blood moon doomsday

Is it Doomsday for Krypton (answer: yes)

General Dru-Zod (Colin Salmon) is now ruling the land and his mother Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell) stands by his side.  As rebels are joined by Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) in the fight against Zod, Nyssa (Wallis Day) tries to cope with the loss of Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) while helping his grandfather Val-El (Ian McElhinney) and Jax-Ur (Hannah Waddingham) fight back against Zod’s rule.  Meanwhile in the Phantom Zone, Seg finds himself trapped with Brainiac (Blake Ritson)…and the fate of Krypton and his future descendant Superman hangs in the balance!

Krypton—Season 2 aired on Syfy from June 12, 2019 to August 14, 2019.  With declining ratings, the series was cancelled just as Season 2 was wrapping up.  A spin-off Lobo series was also scrapped.

The Main Man Lobo gets shut down…bastich!

I started Krypton after Krypton’s cancellation.  I knew going into it that it would be a frustrating end.  The first season played like a bad Shakespearian play with a dull story and not very impressive sets.  Despite this, I dove into Season 2…and found it (slightly) beat the sophomore slump by improving.

Krypton still has a ways to go to being good in this season, but it did show potential of being better.  I found the beginning of Smallville rather tedious as well with creature-of-the-week and little ties to the bigger DC Universe.  Krypton decided to rectify that problem this season and make it more “comic-book-y” by bringing in superheroes and more characters from the DCU.

krypton season 2 episode 10 the alpha and the omega thanagar hawkworld hawkman

Thanagar!!! I can’t wait! Omega Men…yes!!! Crap…

The addition of superheroes does add a slight spark to the series.  I’ve never been that big of Lobo fan, but it was something different for a series that mostly had characters running through tunnels and having bad soap-opera romances.  In addition to Lobo, Brainiac returns as one of the villains, and you get an impressive looking Doomsday (who I prefer to the Doomsday of Batman v Superman).  It keeps the season moving in the sense you look forward to the episodes where these characters appear, and they break up the monotony of the Seg-Nyssa-Lyta-General Zod-Jayna-Dev storyline that has been brewing since Season 1.

The cast also feels more comfortable this season.  Cameron Cuffe is more likable and a bit more defined.  I like Wallis Day this season with Nyssa finally getting more of a storyline, but in giving Nyssa a bigger story, Ann Ogbomo and Aaron Pierre really don’t have much to do.  Colin Salmon continues to be menacing as Zod, but the character needs more direction.  I do like the development of Rasmus Hardiker’s Kem and the series tries to demonstrate that Shaun Sipos’s Adam Strange is becoming a true hero in his own standing.

krypton season 2 episode 10 the alpha and the omega brainiac jor-el blake ritson

I can’t wait to see what nefarious plans Brainiac has for Jor-El…or not

A big problem with Krypton—Season 1 was the sets.  I like some of the special effects of the series and the costume designs, but the basic dark and mopey look of all the locations looked very much like sets.  This season livened things up by getting off the planet a few times (and also visiting a bright city in the “Mercy” episode).  It provided a much needed change to series.

As the series begins to swell, Krypton ends.  The future promised the Thanagar-Rann and Hawkworld with hints of the Omega Men.  You had Brainiac headed to Earth with Jor-El where Jor-El would gain powers like his son, and Sig and Lobo making a tentative deal to track Brainiac…plus, Adam Strange finally got his rocket pack.  All of this of course was crushed by the cancellation and as more time passes, it seems unlikely that a season or even a movie wrap-up will happen.  This is unfortunate, and a trend that has kind of been forgotten over the years with series that have set endings.  Krypton had a set ending (it blows-up and Superman lives)…but we most likely will never see it.
