The gang’s all here!

When the dinosaurs escaped from the Lockwood Estate, the world order was changed…and humanity is in danger.  Biosyn Genetics has vowed to restore balance by capturing the dinosaurs and providing them a home in the mountains of Italy’s Dolomites…but Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) could secretly be the key to Biosyn’s CEO Dr. Lewis Dodgson (Campbell Scott) plans.  Maisie is kidnapped and Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) race to rescue her and Blue’s baby.  Meanwhile, giant locust have settled on the fields and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) is trying to find their origin…and she needs help from Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum).  Humanity is in danger and the dinosaurs might not be far behind them

You can’t even go swimming in this park…what a crock

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World:  Dominion is an action adventure sci-fi movie.  Following Jurassic World:  Fallen Kingdom in 2018, it was met with mixed to average reviews.  It received Razzies for Worst Actress (Howard), Worst Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel, and Worst Screenplay.

Jurassic World:  Fallen Kingdom was a pretty disappointing movie.  Jurassic World was kind of like a throwback to the first Jurassic Park, but Jurassic World:  Fallen Kingdom tried to change up the format slightly…but it did it really badly (I came to see dinosaurs…not dinosaurs in a haunted house plus clones).  Jurassic World:  Dominion tries to go back to the original format but adds the end of The Lost World:  Jurassic Park…it is forgettable but harmless.

I feel I’ve done this before…

The movie shows that the story is about tapped out.  A new dinosaur sanctuary is built to study the dinosaurs and new problems happen…like always.  There is a new set of characters not realizing that they can’t control the dinosaurs and they die as a result.  The movie works best when it is about how the dinosaurs fit into the new world order, but the movie gives up any of the sci-fi discussion for rehashed action (plus, it sidelines Blue which they tried to so hard in the previous films to make an endearing character).

The big hook of this Jurassic World is that the original players from the first Jurassic Park are back.  Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill are brought back in and the film brings Sattler, Grant, and Malcolm in a way that is halfway logical.  They are in their normal form, but it also in a way sidelines the new cast Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Isabella Sermon (but the story doesn’t just entirely eliminate the stupid clone story from the last movie).  Campbell Scott is possibly one of the most generic villains I have seen.  I had hope for some sort of twist or something with the character, but it doesn’t happen.

It is cool when good dinosaurs team-up to fight the dick dinosaurs

The dinosaurs also are good, but they aren’t revolutionary at this point.  The first film was a revelation and seeing the dinosaurs was amazing.  Here, you just expect them.  There are a few new designs, but the dinosaurs seem second fiddle to the plot…even the T-Rex and Giganotosaurus battle is underwhelming (it was nice to see the dilophosaurus again).

Jurassic World:  Dominion just feels tired.  There is nothing new and bringing back the older characters added a little spice but not enough fun or depth.  I love dinosaurs, but nothing new is happening.  While I still prefer this film to the previous film, it just feels like a time filler…and a movie about cool dinosaurs should not ever get that definition.  Jurassic Park or Jurassic World or whatever just needs to go extinct…at least for a while.
