At least the Creeper has a good sense of humor…pretending to be a scarecrow before eating the kid is a pretty good joke
It is almost the end of the Creeper’s season, and his nest has been discovered and destroyed. Now with only a couple days left to hunt, the Creeper (Jonathan Breck) is getting desperate. First, he takes the son of a farmer named Jack Taggart (Ray Wise) who seeks revenge. Then, a team bus headed back from a big football game is crippled by the Creeper. With only a night left, survival becomes the key. Not only is the Creeper hunting the students, but Taggart is hunting the Creeper…and only one will survive.
Directed by Victor Salva, Jeepers Creepers 2 is a monster horror movie. The film is a follow-up to the hit movie Jeepers Creepers from 2001, and like the original movie, Jeepers Creepers 2 was met with a big box office turnout and mixed reviews.
Jeepers Creepers was a picture that underwhelmed. The movie’s story was so-so but the Creeper was a great creation wasted. Here, you get more creature, less story, and improved kills for a slightly better horror film.
The story is pretty secondary in this Jeepers Creepers. The first movie tried hard to have more of a story with talk of the twenty-three year cycle (like a cicada) and a psychic that could see the future. Here, there is a random psychic connection which mostly is just used to explain the Creeper’s life cycle but the rest of the movie is just horror, hunging, and killing…which is an improvement. It does get a bit long in the tooth at points when there doesn’t seem to be any plan by the characters. Also, this film has no irritating “Jeepers Creepers” song playing.
The acting in this film is also secondary. Most of the actors are just young actors that are easy horror movie bait with little standing out. The movie tries a bit too hard to give them personalities, and it is better once the killing starts. The star power of the film is Ray Wise as the mourning father and Creeper slayer who eats up his scenes. There is a cameo by Justin Long who battled the Creeper in the first film, but Jonathan Breck as the Creeper once again gets all the raves.
The Creeper is even more elaborate in this film and you get to see much more of him. It spends most of the movie flying around (somehow unseen by most characters even during the day) and demonstrates even more new powers…even ripping off his head to replace it. It doesn’t always make sense, but it is fun.
Jeepers Creepers 2 is a slight improvement over Jeepers Creepers, and it is really odd that the franchise didn’t continue then with its box office success. Despite being a slightly better entry, the movie still is cursed due to Victor Salva’s past as a child molester and it can easily be argued that the guy shouldn’t have had any other opportunities to make movies after the events occurring during the making of Clownhouse were common knowledge. After a long delay, Jeepers Creepers 3 was released in 2017, but the Salva controversy led to a limited release for the film.
