Greg Heffley continues to struggle with home and school, but now there is a question of girls. When a Valentine’s Dance is announced at school, the race is on to get a date for the prom. With advice from his slacker Uncle Gary, Greg’s out to get a girl if Rowley doesn’t get one first.
Written and illustrated by Jeff Kinney, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel is the seventh book in the successful kids’ series which has also begun appearing on the screen. It was released on November 13, 2012 and like most of the books was a big seller before it even hit the shelf with pre-sales.
This outing by Greg Heffley doesn’t have much of a central theme. Many of the other stories have dealt with a big secret or an event that Greg is trying to live down. This story starts out with Greg talking about his memories of being young and meeting his brothers. It then introduces his slacker uncle Jeff who has a scam t-shirt deal that remarkably resembles a plot piece of the first season of Weeds (also with a slacker uncle).Eventually, the story gets to a plot and has a Valentine’s Day dance at school. Greg has to venture into the world of girls to try to get a date and this part of the story picks up. The highlight of each book has to be Greg’s scheming and it really gets going as Greg tries to “seduce” girls into going to the dance with him.
I don’t know if I like the writing of Wimpy Kid books as much as I enjoy Kinney’s art, but it is more the combination of both. The simplistic style just captures the words and really expresses them. I don’t know if the Wimpy Kid books are illustrations with words or books that are illustrated. The line is blurred.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid 7: The Third Wheel is a decent entry in the Wimpy Kid series. The story takes a while to get going, but once the idea of Greg getting a date is in place, it works. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid has a lot of momentum behind it, and it will continue on page and probably on film. Diary of a Wimpy Kid 7: The Third Wheel was followed by Diary of a Wimpy Kid 8: Hard Luck in 2013.
