Terrorists are hatching a plot and are planning a nuclear attack. It is up to the military of multiple countries to stop the terrorists before the bomb goes off. As the clock ticks down, you must use the latest technology to hunt down and prevent disaster.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a big change from the previous Call of Duty games. It was a big success and saved a rather stalled and stale game series. It was released on the PC, XBox 360, and PS3 in 2007 and on the Wii as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare–Reflex Edition in 2009 (with a lot of criticism of its controls/graphics). It won multiple awards and topped tons of “Best Game of the Year” lists.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had a different spin since it wasn’t set in the past and it also was a fictionalized story. This really opens up the series for incredible maps and assignments. There are a ton of great boards in the game with lots of variety in scenery. There are a number of stealth missions that force the player to keep hidden or missions where they are forced to run when discovered. This is a good mix with the standard point and shoot (which you also get in the story). It also provides a great moment about 1/3 of the way through the game when one of your characters meets an unfortunate end (a must see).
The controls on the game are quite smooth and the environments really effect the gameplay. Be it the sinking ship, the helicopter battle, or the black-ops assassination assignment, it does a great job making it feel like you are in the environment and it varies enough to really get the player into the game.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare also boasts a very popular online gameplay with a variety of different combat matches. The game involve either team or players in various styles of gameplay. Points awarded during challenges allow more weapons to unlock. Multiple downloadable map packs are available to enhance the existing maps or a Game of the Year edition which collects the maps.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare really changed the direction of the Call of Duty series. The follow up game Call of Duty: World at War went back to World War II time and many saw as a pale follow-up to this game. The series realized the popularity of this game, and it became the first Call of Duty game with a true follow-up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and the spin-off Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010).
