1922 movie dead wife well molly parker

You take to the nicest places…

Wilfred James (Thomas Jane) has big plans for his farm and the son he intends to pass it on to.  When his wife (Molly Parker) decides she wants to tell the farm and move away with his son Henry (Dylan Schmid), Wilfred will have none of it.  He plots a means to not only keep his son but also get the farm and the land.  Unfortunately, every action has a reaction and every crime has its price.

Directed by Zak Hilditch, 1922 is a supernatural horror period piece.  The film is an adaptation of Stephen King’s short novella from his 2010 story collection Full Dark, No Stars.  It was released on Netflix on October 20, 2017.

Stephen King has written a lot.  Some of it is very good, and some of it is pretty bad.  He also has written a lot of average stuff…and 1922 is one of those average tales.  It feels like a movie that should have been more stylized or more horrific…and ends up rather bland.

Whisper sweet nothings in my ear…

The movie feels like it should have out-and-out been a “Tell-Tale Heart” adaptation with more of a horror approach.  It kind of starts out that way with Jane’s character almost being driven crazy by his actions and rats seemingly appearing everywhere.  The movie becomes more supernatural as the story moves on, and it feels like it misses some opportunities in that transition…a psychological horror involving matricide and a lot of Shakespearian themes was really fit for a mental terror instead of a real horror with ghosts, rats, etc…they might not really be there in the movie, but they could have been more implied for a stronger story.

Thomas Jane plays “old man Thomas Jane” with a gruff voice.  He’s supposed to be the uber-farmer who hates the city and loves the land, but it feels more cliché here than rounded.  I think his darkness and decisions to manipulate his son should have been explored more.  It is a character piece but I don’t know if I like the character enough.

Money changes everything

Visually the movie does have the seasonal look it needs.  Farms survive in seasons and the movie goes from fertile land to the dead of winter.  It gets colder and colder as the film goes on and Wilfred loses more.  That works in the movie, but the movie needs to be expanded more in the plot and characters to meet the visuals.

1922 is an average film.  With it “free” on Netflix it might be worth watching, but there are also probably better horror films out there that you can find.  Fans of Stephen King might want to see it as completionists, but for the most part 1922 won’t do much for you…but hey, it is still better than The Mangler.
