So, did we just chop the top off a tree or is this the smallest Christmas tree?

It is Christmas time again and the Smurfs are celebrating.  The whole Smurf village is getting ready for the big celebration, and Wild Smurf is celebrating his first Christmas ever.  When Grandpa Smurf and Sassette see an elderly couple struggling to survive the holiday, the Smurfs decide to lend a hand to help them have the best Christmas ever.  Plus, they might just teach a lesson to an uppity rich man and a lowly crook in the process.

Directed by Ray Patterson, The Smurfs:  ’Tis the Season to Be Smurfy was the second Smurf primetime Christmas episode following The Smurfs Christmas Special in 1982.  It aired on December 13, 1987.

I told you I was going to shut you up!

The first Smurfs’ Christmas special had a less typical plot by the edition of a strange Satan-like character that was trying to destroy the Smurfs and capture children.  This story is much more along the lines of the Smurf cartoon with the Smurfs helping a toymaker and his wife almost like the Grimm Brothers story “The Elves and the Shoemaker” (in fact the toymaker and his wife mistake the Smurfs for elves).  I know if I saw a Smurf running around my home, I’d probably pull out the d-Con and there would be one less Smurf in the world.  The whole elves/Smurf thing alone is a good story, but unfortunately, it isn’t the only story in the episode.

Honey, we have strange blue rats in our house

The special has a few different stories going on in the short period of time and it feels like they should have just picked one.  Wild’s first Christmas seems like the smartest story to stick with, but the whole toymaker thing was supposed to teach him what Christmas was however.  The second story is that there is a rich man who hates the poor (he learns his lesson when he is forced to interact with them).  The third story is about a robber who is taught a lesson by Brainy Smurf and Hefty Smurf.  There is just a lot of stories going on and the show would have been simpler with one less story.

The Smurfs:  ’Tis the Season to Be Smurfy is a rather typical Christmas special.  The story will feel familiar to fans of the show.  It is available on DVD with the first Smurf Christmas special so it might be worth picking up for younger kids and fans of the show.
