The rebels of Lothal have found they have joined the bigger rebellion against the Empire. Travelling the stars as the Empire attempts to quash the uprising, the crew of the Ghost learns having allies can be a blessing and a curse. Star Wars Rebels—Season 2 aired from June 20, 2015 to March 30, 2016 on Disney XD. The season further continues storylines from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series which ran for six seasons.
Star Wars Rebels got smart near the end of the first season. It revealed that not only did the Clone Wars happen in continuity with Rebels, but that the characters that viewers had grown to like were coming back for this series. As a fan of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this season of Star Wars Rebels was even better than the last.
The series smartly delves deeper into Star Wars mythology. This season has The Clone Wars’ Ahsoka as a regular character and also brings back characters like Rex. Storylines involving Darth Maul resurfaced at the end of the season and the series dips into the movies by bringing in Lando (again), Princess Leia, Yoda, and the big-bad Darth Vader (who James Earl Jones returned to voice). It was a fun ride (despite a few so-so episodes).
The series looks good. It is a testament to how far computer animation has come over the decades. Something like Star Wars Rebels in 1998 would have been inconceivable at this quality, but here, it is affordable enough to get a full season from but good enough to give you a vested interest in the characters.
Star Wars Rebels keeps you wanting more. The last episode of this season is quite intense with many storylines reaching a peak. The episode ends exactly where it needs to end to have you wishing for Star Wars Rebels—Season 3…and wondering what happened to your favorite characters. I just want to see more and more creatures from the original films returning (and with the new trilogy being released along with stand-alone films, a few nods to that could be in the cards). Long live Star Wars Rebels…it is a good ride for fans of the Star Wars Universe.
