Cliche stories and awful music

jem season 1 title card episode guide

She’s truly outrageous!

Jerrica Benton has just lost her father, but discovers her inheritance includes a super-computer named Synergy.  Now in an attempt to save her orphans home Starlight House, Jerrica discovers that Synergy could be the key to saving her charity…and turn her and her friends into superstars!  Jerrica, her sister Kimber, Aja Leith, and Shana Elmsford are now Jem and the Holograms and they must keep Jem’s secret!  As Jerrica juggles her love for Rio and Rio’s feelings for Jem, the Holograms have an enemy in Eric Raymond and his rival band the Misfits!

Jem—Season 1 is an animated musical series.  The season aired from December 6, 1985 to March 15, 1987 in syndication and was also known as Jem and the Holograms.  The series was a Hasbro collaboration to tie-in to Hasbro’s Barbie competition line of dolls.

jem season 1 opening misfits

We know you’re music is better Misfits

G.I. Joe, Transformers, and He-Man were for boys and She-Ra, Jem, and My Little Pony were for girls…in the ’80s.  That being said, it didn’t mean that boys never watched the series…I watched She-Ra rather regularly due to my love of He-Man.  I didn’t watch Jem very often however (mostly because it didn’t air at a time when I could see it).  Rewatching Jem shows that the series is a great reflection of what was popular in the ’80s and how corporates saw “pop music”.

The series is essentially presented as a “super hero” story with Jem having a secret identity (an idea later used in the Miley Cyrus series Hannah Montana).  It is cheesy and often doesn’t make sense…Synergy seems to be able to do anything, but Jerrica and her friends “forget” to use her often, and it really could get them out of problems (like just have Synergy contact the police half the time…or as seen in the shipwrecked episode, they could have just let Synergy alert people that they are stranded on an island).

jem season 1 episode 1 the beginning synergy

I bet even the computer thinks…these girls don’t deserve me

When Jem slows down and the writers are stretching for a story, they mix in a storyline with the Starlight girls.  It seems really random and feels like Jerrica actually is often neglecting them since they aren’t always around.  You get stories like Bae Nee looking for her dad and Deidra running away…it feels like they should either be more involved or less involved in the show.  The animation for the girls is also amusing since they just look like adults…but smaller.

While Jem is the star, the Misfits are the fun ones.  They actually seem to develop the Misfits a bit more with Pizzazz’s relationship with her father and Stormer’s “nice girl” actions.  Their music is generally better, but it is ironic that most of their actions are usually completely criminal and there is no police involvement, but I’d still rather watch a Misfits show.

jem season 1 episode 24 the jem jam part 1 i can see me ashley and the starlights

Yeah….a song by the kids from the Starlight kids…ugh

Each episode highlights songs by Jem or by the Misfits.  The show started out with three songs an episode, but often cut down to two by the end of the first season (with a replay at the end of the two songs).  The songs are great ’80s pop in the vein of Debbie Gibson or Tiffany.  The lyrics are awful, the titles are awful, and the “videos” look like clichés of videos from the time…it is the best part of the show.

Jem is a quick and kind of fun watch.  The episodes are short and predictable and they quickly get repetitive, but most ’80s cartoons are like that (though the series does have some surprisingly long continuing storyline episodes).  I do think that the basic concepts would hold up for younger kids who haven’t seen the show and it is a nice show to return to if you haven’t seen it since you were little.  Don’t go in expecting much however and be prepared for some “so sweet” saccharine moments that are hard to stomach…and guess what Jem always wins.
