Wow, the Viking holiday of Snoggletog sure looks a heck of a lot like Christmas

It is Snoggletog on the island of Berk and the Vikings of Berk are preparing to celebrate their first Snoggletog with the dragons. When the dragons suddenly leave, the Vikings wonder if the holiday is a failure. When Hiccup discovers where the dragons have gone, he learns why Snoggletog is a holiday for the dragons as well. Plus, Hiccup’s attempt to give Toothless his freedom might mean losing Toothless forever.

Directed by Tom Owens, How to Train Your Dragon: Gift of the Night Fury was released on November 15, 2011 paired with How to Train Your Dragon: Book of Dragons. It received mostly positive reviews.

I changed my mind…I want to eat you.

The story is a fun extension of the film How to Train Your Dragon. The short film has Hiccup dealing with his new handicap but also the town celebrating their new union with the dragons.

The animation for this special is in line with the film. It has a great look, and I continue to love the animation design for the Night Fury. I wish that we could have seen some Night Fury dragon whelps. With animation that matches the film, it is also good that the makers got Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Kristen Wiig to return to provide the voices.

Merry Christmas, Toothless!

I do see a slight problem with the new allegiance with dragons in this story. With the obviously rapid reproductive cycle of the dragons, and an undefined lifespan for the existing dragons, the Vikings could be dealing with an over-population problem. They will find themselves fishing for the new dragons and becomes slaves to the dragons themselves.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Gift of the Night Fury isn’t very Christmasy so it can be enjoyed any time of the year. If you enjoyed How to Train Your Dragon you definitely should hunt this one down since it does expand upon the tale. With sequels planned and the TV series, this is a nice addition to the world of How to Train Your Dragon.
