Got to earn your money

The amateur porn industry is booming and young women are the key.  The younger looking the better and the more money they can make.  For many girls, it is the only way they can make large amounts of money without a college education or family support.  The rock-star life is a dream, but the price of pornography lasts longer.

Directed by Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus and produced by Rashida Jones, Hot Girls Wanted is a documentary about the amateur porn industry.  The movie premiered at Sundance on January 24, 2015 and was released on Netflix on May 29, 2015.  The documentary received mixed to positive reviews.

The internet has made stars out of anyone with a camera and we live in a world where “reality” stars can be celebrities.  This makes porn the perfect prey grounds for girls who believe that they can be discovered and move on to be the next Kim Kardashian.  It just isn’t real.

The most human part of the documentary

You feel pretty dirty watching this documentary.  Even if you don’t watch porn, you know that someone around you probably does and could be into the different subgenres that the girls talk about (like verbal and semi-physical abuse—simulated or not).  The documentary does a decent job putting it in your face, but more development of the individual girls would have helped to humanize and individualize them more.

The problem is, that porn really might be the only way to a level of living that these girls have been conditioned to want.  They want it all and they want it while they are young.  Many haven’t been to college and are escaping home, and we live in a consumer society where there is a lot of conceived entitlement on the side of the girls…and it is never financially possible to attain the images they see.  The girls don’t get the long-term cost to the short term gain.

The life of Riley

The real winner in the whole game is Riley Reynolds.  His porn agency Hussie Models gets a free advertisement.  Regardless of the consequences, girls will still seek this out and I bet he had a boost in auditions.  His feigned concern for the girls doesn’t mean much as he’s counting and controlling the money for their sex acts like a pimp.  I could also see other potential Riley Reynolds surfacing when guys see his life.

Hot Girls Wanted is a bit frustrating in the fact that I don’t think it would actually do anything to deter a girl from going into the industry…they believe that they’re time will be different.  If you aren’t in porn, you kind of already know that it is a rough place, and you just feel dirty watching it and knowing what goes on with more detail.  It still is a documentary that might be worth seeing if you can stomach it.
